What I Use Part 2

If you look at the graph of what I use - It is apparent that I use Firefox more then any other application. A lot of people would ask why is that. Their is a simple reason. I run a lot of applications that fall into the “Cloud Computing” category. What this means is that these apps are Internet based.

Examples of Internet based apps are my blog, gmail, photo editing sites, file format conversion sites and even the new Microsoft live Sky Drive.

Why would anyone use cloud computing applications one would ask? The biggest reason is that I can access these applications from any pcs on the Internet. I am not tied to the local setup on the pc. I really like this this I use multiple pcs and tend to be all over the place.

What I Use

I am still working on a list of what I use and why but I have signed up for wakoppa on my home desktop and that will show you what I use at home on my primary desktop. I should have that list I am working on posted in the next week or so.

Blue Ray VS HD DVD

Well the battle is over. It looks like the Sony Blue Ray Standard has one out. The two latest shots in the battle are that Toshiba announced last week that they will no longer be manufacturing any HD DVD machines. The 2nd latest change is that Microsoft has announced the XBOX 360 will no longer be equipped with HD DVD players. Those 2 moves plus with 4 out of 6 movie houses allied with Blue Ray make this one a done deal.

Windows Live

I have been playing around a lot with the new Windows Live Features. If you have a hotmail account, it is easy to convert to Windows Live. It seems to work great.

One of the neat features that Microsoft has made available is a skydrive. This is space on the net where you can store files. I will be using it on Saturday to transfer files from my mom’s office pc in her office to her new pc which is in my home office. I will let everyone know how it goes.

If you want to sign up for your own skydrive you can go here: Skydrive

Vista Update on Service Pack 1

Well the Vista service pack 1 was released to manufacturing in early February. Tech Net subscribers can obtain it now. According to the Microsoft web site, it will be made available to the rest of the world via Windows update and the Microsoft download site come the middle of March.

One Site to Warn You About

One of the many Phishing issues on MSN is a site called http://www.msnliststatus.com/?. This site is a phishing site that is setup to steal your msn password. I ran into this Gem because my son was infected with it.

How do you get rid of this one?

1. Change your msn password.

2. Run Adaware/spybot or another spyware program to get rid of it.

Yahoo Rejects Microsofts Bid

Well Yahoo did the expected and rejected Microsoft’s hostile takeover bid today. Personally I think it is an effort to drive share prices up and get a higher return on investment for their share holders.

Before it is out someone will buy Yahoo. At one time they used to be an innovator. That is no longer the case. Personally I do not use any Yahoo services anymore but that is due to security concerns. I had a bad experience.

That all said Microsoft has the resources to resurrect Yahoo and make it a leader one more time.

Service Pack Release Dates

Service Pack Release Dates as follows:

Vista SP1 - Feb 18/2008

XP SP3 - March 24/2008

As always these dates are subject to change by Microsoft.

Microsoft Trying To Buy Yahoo

In reality this attempted hostile takeover had to happen. Let’s look at the facts. Microsoft is one rich company. That said this will be the first time in their history that Microsoft will have to borrow money to finance the buyout. Should we be concerned - not really.

Yahoo has been struggling for years. Overpowered by Google. The reality is the only company that can challenge Goggle at this point in time is Microsoft. No one else in the market place has the resources.

Microsoft has talked for years about making the Internet an extension of the desktop. They are already working on that with their new Windows Live technology. This would just take things up another notch.

Will the buyout happen - in time I think it will. Microsoft is as much of an innovator in the marketplace and the competion will be good for both companies.
