Misc Tech Rant

Well today I thought I would try a little some different on my blog. That I would touch on several technology issues and coming and goings for the week.

1. The biggest news in Canada is that they are going to change the copyright act to come into the digital age. The copyright act in Canada is so far out of date that it is not funny. I can see why they are doing this.

2. Google and Yahoo have struck an add deal.  As a result Microsoft now states that they do not want to buy all of Yahoo and they had only wanted to buy Yahoo if it was quick. Is months of negotiating  quick?

3.  My space has decided to do a face lift on their site.  The reality is that Facebook just did one and they are trying to compete.

4.  The new 3G I Phone is out and the I Phone is now coming to Canada soon. That is good news because I want one!!!!!

Microsoft/Yahoo Bid

Well Microsoft has let it knowen they are still after Yahoo. Why is this happening people ask. As a company Microsoft places a lot of money behind their desktop operating system, their network server operating system and their office package. They have other offerings like exchange and sms to name a few but the others are their staple.

One thing that has Microsoft in trouble lately is that they have increased corporate licensing for all their products. As a result many corporations are now looking for alternatives. It a lot of case licensing fees have doubled. Getting greedy will cost Microsoft in the long run.

The other reality is Microsoft has many mature products. XP Pro/Office/Exchange are all very stable products. So is Server 2008 with it’s new Virtulization technology.  With mature packages why would people upgrade.

The 3rd reality is all of this would never have happened with Bill Gates in charge. Steve Ballmer is a little more progressive in his thinking and open to moving ahead more.

The 4th reason is Microsoft let Goggle get far ahead of them to be the number one portal on the net. So now they must do something about it.

XP SP3 Final Comments

Personally I like Windows XP SP3. It is basically a roll-up of all the security patches since XP2. Their are enhancements for Wireless security in it as well. WPA-2 is now supported.

I have been running it all week on my home desktop, gf’s laptop and my work laptop and I have had no major issues.

Issues with Windows XP SP3

Cnet is reporting that their are issues with Windows Xp SP3 and AMD systems. The route of the issues seems to be improperly installed copies of Windows XP OEM versions. For more on this story click on the link below:

More Windows XP SP3 Issues

It seems Microsoft has noticed that their are issues with Windows XP SP3 and AMD chipsets. Despite these latest issues, Microsoft is not prepared to stop distribution of this important update.

Vista Experiment 2 Over

After a year of running Vista on my Sony Dual core laptop, I am about to reinstall it and put Microsoft Windows XP back on the laptop.  I have had more issues with crashes and software not doing what I wanted so I am removing Vista. What most people forget is Windows XP Pro is now a mature operating system that has been around a long time. The bugs are long out and the security is working real well.

Vista still has bugs even after SP1 and a lot of drivers seem unstable. Their does not seem to be an end to this coming soon.

One Note Experiment Over

Well over the last year I have been playing with Microsoft’s one note at work and at home. I have decided the product just does not work for me. I will be converting all my work files from one note to pdf files so I have them. I have already converted all my home files.

The product is really robust. It allows you to store email info, web pages, notes and many other objects all in the same area. The problem I have is that it just seems to take way too much time to setup and maintain this system for me. Unfortunately these days I do not have that  much free time to maintain things.

I am switching to a pdf based filling system which is bound to make my life easier.

Microsoft Yahoo Update

In the last week, Microsoft has come out and said they will make their takeover of Yahoo a hostile one if need be. Yahoo is a sitting duck - it is just a matter of time. The question is who and when not if.

The reality is the Yahoo board needs to get as much money for the takeover for it’s shareholders. Yahoo as a Internet portal is no longer an inovator and has long been surpassed by Google in that department.

Their has been talk of AOL or even Google taking over Yahoo. The Google rumour I do not seem happening because I can see Anti-trust issues all over again. The AOL rumour just hope does not not happen because AOL has a habbit of running things(see Netscape/ICQ etc).

This all said Microsoft is the only likely winner in this battle.

Vista Issues

As many of you know I decided to back out Windows Vista on my home desktop. As a result, I have not be en posting much this week since I have not had much spare time. The good news is my home pc is running great.

I ran into more vista issues this week. I have a Sony Viao laptop that I use for work. On it I had Windows Vista Service Pack 1 running as well as my works remote client for VPN (Aventail). Well it turns out that our version of Aventail is not compatible with Vista Service Pack 1. It is only  compatible with native Vista.

I had to run system restore and take my laptop back before Vista Service Pack 1 then reinstall SP1. I have decided to run Vista on a XP Virtual machine.

Total time to fix this mess - 2hours of troubleshooting plus 3.5 hours to undo changes and reisntall.
